So, I'm not sure how much of this issue is talked about outside of California, but in the November election here in California there is a Proposition that will be on the ballot that would Amend the State Constitution and add the words, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California."
Our first Sunday in our ward here the Bishop read a letter from the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints. Here's part of what it said:
"In March 2000 California voters overwhelmingly approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people... The Church’s teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, and the formation of families is central to the Creator’s plan for His children. Children are entitled to be born within this bond of marriage...We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage. "
So after reading the letter we were asked to donate either time or money (or both!). So Thomas and I participated in all 3 of the scheduled neighbourhood canvasings. We figure we have more time than money! (*side note* apparently there are many in the Stake w/ more $ than time. The Stake has raised over $200,000 for the Yes on Prop 8 Campaign! Amazing!) Anyways, Thomas and I participated by walking door to door and asking registered voters if they knew about Prop 8, and which way they would vote if the election were today. We had some interesting experiences, and found our dream neighbourhood here w/ nice families, and kids playing on the street! And super friendly people! But most of all I am so grateful that we have had the experience of receiving a command ("Our best efforts are required") from the First Presidency and choosing and being able to following that command exactly. There aren't that many commandments or times when you can really have that feeling. And It's a really great feeling to know that you truly are on the Lord's side. But even with our efforts so far, I am concerned that more needs to be done to ensure that Prop 8 is passed. There is MAJOR support for gay marriage here, and a lot of it manifests in huge donations, which means more airtime. But from reading the letter from the First Presidency I believe that if the Saints in California truly put forth their best effort Prop 8 will be passed. That is the test, if enough effort from those who are on the Lord's side will be made. That is why I decided to write about it here. I want my support to be known. We have a sticker for the car, and a lawn sign is on the way, & we have been to 100s of homes to inform, but an issue this big needs big attention even if it's from out of state. So if anyone has friends, family etc in California remind them to register (time is coming up) and send them to ProtectMarrige.com the official Yes on Prop 8 Campaign Group. And if they are unsure which way to vote (and they're LDS) direct them to LDS.org Newsroom and have them read the letter. We have a duty! Let's not fail!
Marriage between a man and a woman, one of God's greatest gifts to His children.
